Image requirement guide

Resize an image to 512 × 512

Square assets are common, but a square canvas should not quietly distort the source. Aftermath makes crop and fit choices explicit.

A square canvas without a silent distortion

A 512 × 512 target is common for icons and compact profile assets, but a rectangular source should not be squeezed into the square. Crop to fill when the edges are disposable, or fit with a transparent or colored background when the entire source matters.

PNG is useful when the background must remain transparent

This preset starts with PNG so transparency is available. If the destination prefers a smaller photographic file, switch formats intentionally and read the output warning before treating the file as upload-ready.

Questions people ask

Is this the same as a Google Play icon?

It is a generic 512 × 512 square preset. The Google Play icon preset adds the current icon file-size and PNG checks from Google’s official requirements.

Can I use a custom background?

Yes. Choose white, black, transparent, a blurred backdrop, or a custom color when padding is needed.

How to use this tool

This route starts with a 512 × 512 crop canvas, PNG output, transparent background, and a 1 MiB maximum. It is for a general square image or icon-sized asset when no marketplace-specific compliance is being claimed. The result is checked for exact dimensions and bytes. Choose the Google Play icon route when its alpha-channel and store-source rules matter, or exact pixels for a different square size.

What to choose and what you get

What to choose

  • one supported local image

Result

  • a separate processed image copy or local measurement report

Supported use

  • Verified JPG, PNG, or WebP sources rendered to an exact 512 × 512 PNG canvas with transparent-background support.
  • Visible crop placement or an alternate fit choice, followed by exact-dimension and maximum-byte validation.

Before you start

  • A 512 × 512 result is not automatically a valid Google Play icon, favicon, app-store icon, or profile asset.
  • The preset does not preserve vector data or guarantee that a square crop retains every edge of a non-square source.

Supported formats

  • Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, BMP.
  • Output formats: JPG, PNG, WebP.

Browser support and permissions

  • Modern browser with JavaScript, a supported image decoder, and enough memory for the selected image.
  • No camera, microphone, or screen permission is needed.

Choose the right settings

  • Use this preset for a neutral 512 × 512 PNG when a square canvas is the only known target.
  • Use /google-play-icon-resizer for the tested Google Play PNG, alpha-channel, and 1024 KB checks.
  • Use /resize-image-pixels for another width and height, or change from crop to fit when preserving the whole source matters.

Worked example

A square profile asset is needed at exactly 512 × 512 pixels with transparent padding around a narrow logo.

Starting facts

  • The source logo is wider than it is tall.
  • The intended result is a transparent PNG square.

Observed operation: Choose contain rather than crop so the complete logo is placed on a 512 × 512 transparent canvas.

Review the result: Verify the receipt reports 512 × 512 PNG output and inspect the transparent margins before using the downloaded copy.

Boundary: The new square cannot restore detail missing from the source or guarantee that another service permits transparency.

What you can do

Create a general-purpose 512 × 512 transparent PNG square with an explicit crop and measured size check.

If it does not work

  • The default crop can remove content near an edge when the focal position is not reviewed.
  • PNG encoding has no lossy quality search, so a complex transparent square can remain above the configured maximum.
  • A source that fails raster signature checks or a browser canvas allocation cannot produce a downloadable square.

Things to know

  • Review the result on the intended device before relying on it.

Privacy boundary

The selected image stays in the current browser session and is not sent to an Aftermath processing service. How local processing is verified.

What this tool verifies

Checks the displayed limits and reports or creates a separate processed image copy or local measurement report from one supported local image.

Check before sharing

A local measurement or export does not guarantee acceptance by an external destination.
