Use a 50 KB ceiling when a portal needs a small photo but a 20 KB target would be too aggressive.
A 50 KB ceiling gives a little more room for faces, signatures, and document photos than a 20 KB target. Aftermath uses the same local measurement loop for every file, so a batch does not depend on one global quality guess.
If a file is dramatically larger than the limit, resizing the canvas first usually protects more detail than repeatedly lowering JPEG quality. Keep the aspect ratio locked, use a nine-point anchor for crops, and review the warning text when the source is smaller than the requested output.
