File won’t open? What to check
Keep the original file and read the error before trying again. Check its actual format, size, and the tool’s limits. A wrong extension alone should not block supported content in Aftermath.

Start with the reported problem
An empty file, an unreadable download, an unsupported format, and a size limit need different fixes. Do not repeatedly change settings until the message disappears. Choose the step that matches the error.
| Problem | Try this |
|---|---|
| File is empty or will not decode | Download it again from the original source. |
| Image type or extension looks wrong | Check the detected format, then export a supported copy. |
| PDF contains a form, signature, or encryption | Use a suitable PDF app, or obtain an authorized flat copy. |
| Video or audio codec is unavailable | Try another supported browser or a suitable local media app. |
| File exceeds this tool’s limit | Use a smaller source or a tool designed for larger files. |
Worked example: the file is PNG but its name says JPG
A supported PNG can arrive with a .jpg name or the wrong browser type label. Aftermath reads its contents, keeps the filename visible, and uses PNG decoding. Renaming is unnecessary for loading it here.
If another website requires JPG, create a real JPG export. Loading a file and converting its format are separate tasks. A damaged file still needs a fresh copy from its source.
Check the limit for the tool you chose
A file can fit one tool and exceed another. For example, Aftermath’s PDF editor accepts up to 50 pages, while PDF diagnostics accept up to 200 pages. Choose the operation you need and read its displayed limits.
Removing the selection with × lets you choose another file. It does not delete the original from your device. Supported selections remain available when you switch compatible tools in the same group.
A size target may need a different choice
A detailed image may not fit a very small byte limit at fixed dimensions. If the destination allows it, try JPG or WebP, reduce quality, or use fewer pixels. Keep transparency and minimum dimensions when they are required.
Review any warning on the saved result. A successful export tells you a file was created; it does not prove the picture is readable or that an upload form will accept it.
Report a repeatable problem without sending the file
Send the page address, exact error, browser, device, and the settings you chose to contact@aftermath.cc. Start with those details. You do not need to attach a private file to explain a problem.
