Browser capture boundary

Screen recording: sound, permissions and saving

Choose a tab, window, or screen, then check sound with a short test. Your browser controls what it can capture. Aftermath lets you preview the recording and save it on your device.

Media results still require playback review because codec support and quality vary by browser and source.

Start with a short recording

Open the screen recorder and choose Start recording. Select the source in the browser’s sharing picker. For a presentation in one tab, choose that tab when the option is available.

Record a few seconds, stop, and preview the result. Confirm that the right area is visible and that both the content and your voice sound as intended.

Worked example: the picture records but sound is missing

Tab sound and microphone narration are separate inputs. Turning on the microphone does not guarantee that a video playing in the tab will be heard. Check the available audio choice in the browser picker.

When the browser blocks capture

Start capture from the page’s button. If permission is denied, check the browser and operating-system permissions for screen recording. A work or school policy can also restrict sharing.

If your phone’s browser does not offer screen capture, use the phone’s built-in recorder. You can then choose the saved video in Aftermath’s video tools, subject to the browser’s codec support.

Save and reopen before closing the tab

Stop recording, preview it, and save the download. Reopen the saved file to check sound, duration, and the last few seconds. An in-page preview is not a saved copy.

Aftermath stops at one hour. Standard mode also stops around its 256 MiB memory threshold; the final browser chunk can take it above that threshold. Keep recordings shorter on devices with limited memory.

Prepare the recording for sharing

Keep the original recording. Trim unwanted time or create a smaller copy for sharing. The recorded format depends on the browser; an MP4 conversion needs supported codecs. Renaming a WebM file does not convert it.

Review notifications, private tabs, and personal details before sending the file. Capture only content you are allowed to share.
