PDF workflow method
Merge, split, and reorder PDFs without losing track of the source
PDF operations are deceptively simple: drag files, pick pages, download a result. The real work is preserving a clear source order, making page-range intent explicit, and reviewing the separate output before it replaces anything.

Order is part of the document meaning
A merge can change the meaning of a document pack when a cover page, attachment, contract, exhibit, or evidence page moves. A reliable workflow makes the order visible and lets a person review it before export.
Aftermath supports a chosen queue order and creates a new file. The source PDFs remain separate, which makes it possible to correct an ordering mistake without trying to reverse an unknown history.
Try it with a safe sample
Merge two PDFs and check page order
These samples contain one A4 page and one Letter page. The real merge tool keeps their order and different sizes.
- Download both PDFs and add A4 first, then Letter.
- Choose Merge PDFs and save the result.
- Open the result. A4 should be page one; Letter should be page two.
| Input documents | 2 PDF |
|---|---|
| Merged pages | 2 |
| First page size | 595.28 × 841.89 pt |
| Second page size | 612 × 792 pt |
| Measured output | 1,640 B |
Merging does not make mixed page sizes equal. Use page normalization for that. These examples contain no forms, signatures, or encryption.

Write split intent as page groups, not as a vague request
A split instruction such as `1-3, 5, 8-10` expresses three separate output groups. A blank split selection has a different meaning: one output for each page. The person running the operation should know which result shape is intended before pressing export.
Page numbers are not a guarantee of meaning. A document may contain rotated pages, duplicated sections, blank pages, or pages that look similar in a thumbnail.
| Operation | Confirm before export | Inspect after export |
|---|---|---|
| Merge | Source order, page count, and supported flat-document status | Opening page, transitions, total pages, and expected document order |
| Split | Page groups, blank-selection meaning, and destination names | Each output group and page range |
| Reorder | Which source sequence is authoritative | That no page was dropped or duplicated |
A ZIP is an output container, not an audit trail
When a split creates several outputs, a ZIP makes the download convenient. It does not prove that the page groups were the right ones. Use clear output names and open representative or critical files before sharing the pack.
If the original is signed, encrypted, permission-restricted, or interactive, stop rather than treating a normal page operation as harmless.
Keep a reversal path
Do not delete sources immediately after a merge or split. Retain the originals until a recipient or downstream process has accepted the output and any required review is complete.
