PDF review method

Blank PDF page detection needs a human review before removal

A blank-page detector identifies pages that appear empty under a selected analysis method. It should be treated as a candidate list, not as proof that removing every flagged page is safe.

PDF decisions are safer when page geometry, output review and unsupported document states stay explicit.

“Blank” is a visual and document-structure judgment

A mostly white page may contain a faint scan, a low-contrast signature, a watermark, an annotation, a form field, an attachment relationship, or an intentional separator. A rendered-pixel analysis and a structural inspection can surface different facts, and neither makes the final editorial decision for you.

The purpose of detection is to reduce repetitive review, not to turn a sensitive document into an unattended deletion queue. Mark pages as candidates, preview them, and preserve the original before building a cleaned copy.

Worked example: an apparently empty scan page

A scanner can produce a page that is 99% white yet still has a faint handwritten note near an edge. A threshold-based tool may classify it as empty because the visible marks are small. At a normal zoom the page looks blank; at a higher contrast or larger preview the note is visible.

That is a useful failure case, not a bug to hide. The detector should surface the page and the reviewer should decide whether it is a scanner artifact, an intentionally blank divider, or meaningful content that must remain.

Reasons a blank-page candidate may need to stay
Possible page contentWhy automation can miss itHuman review action
Faint handwritingLow contrast can fall below a pixel threshold.Zoom and inspect rendered output.
Form or annotationA visual render may not expose interaction state.Check document complexity and keep the original.
Intentional separatorIt is visually blank by design.Confirm document order with the sender or context.

Review settings and source quality affect the signal

A low-resolution render, compression noise, scan shadow, or different viewer background can change the apparent blankness of a page. A threshold suitable for a clean digital export can be unsuitable for a photocopied scan.

Use a representative sample to understand the tool’s behaviour, then review borderline cases. Do not tune a setting until it removes pages you want and call that success; the result should remain explainable to a future reviewer.

Removal is a new document, not a cleanup of history

A page-removed output is a derivative document with a different page count and sequence. Label it accordingly and retain the source. For signed, legal, medical, tax, or official material, a removed-page copy may not be an appropriate substitute for the original.

Aftermath can help find candidates and create a separate output where supported. It cannot tell you which pages a court, agency, archive, or recipient considers material.
